Chapter 7 - The Warehouse On The Docks

The black SUV tore through the wet streets of Chicago, the tires hissing against the asphalt.
I sat in the passenger seat, staring at the heavy silver ring on my thumb. It was too big, but its weight felt like an anchor.
Luca drove with one hand on the wheel. The other rested on the center console, inches from his weapon.
Three more black SUVs trailed us closely.
"My mother," I broke the silence, my voice barely a whisper. "If Vanessa hurts her..."
"She won't," Luca said, his eyes fixed on the road. "Vanessa is a coward. Cowards use hostages as shields, not targets."
"Why did she want Leo and me?"
"Leo was leverage," Luca explained coldly. "To force me to hand over the East Side territory. You were the bonus. She hates you because you saw through her. And because she knows your family owns the land she desperately needs."
We turned sharply into the industrial district. Massive, rust-covered warehouses loomed in the dark like iron skeletons.
Luca cut the headlights.
The convoy rolled to a silent stop a block away from Warehouse 4.
Luca turned to me.
"You stay in the car. The doors will lock automatically when I close mine. Bulletproof glass. Do not get out."
"They are my parents, Luca," I argued, grabbing his arm. "I'm not sitting in a car."
He looked at my hand on his arm. Then up to my eyes.
For a second, the mafia boss vanished, and I saw the desperate father I had handed a shivering boy to twenty minutes ago.
"If anything happens to you," Luca said quietly, "I will burn this city to the ground. Stay in the car."
He stepped out.
The doors locked with a heavy click.
Through the rain-streaked window, I watched Luca and twelve armed men fan out toward the warehouse.
Ten minutes passed.
Silence.
Then, a muffled pop. Then three more.
Gunfire.
My heart hammered in my throat.
I pressed my face against the glass, trying to see through the rain.
Suddenly, a shadow moved near the chain-link fence to my right.
Someone was running away from the warehouse.
A woman in a ruined red evening gown.
Vanessa.
She was limping, clutching a heavy leather bag. She looked terrified, constantly looking over her shoulder.
She was making a run for a parked car down the alley.
I looked at the dashboard. The keys were still in the ignition.
Luca had told me to stay in the car.
But this woman had tormented my family. She had tried to kidnap a six-year-old child.
I slid over to the driver's seat.
I put the SUV in drive.
I didn't turn on the headlights.
As Vanessa reached for the door handle of her getaway car, I slammed my foot on the gas.
The heavy SUV roared to life, shooting forward like a missile.
Vanessa turned, screaming as the SUV jumped the curb.
I slammed on the brakes inches from her legs, pinning her between her car and the grill of the SUV.
She dropped the leather bag. It spilled open.
It wasn't filled with clothes.
It was filled with thick stacks of cash and a shiny, diamond necklace.
I hit the unlock button and stepped out into the rain.
Vanessa stared at me, her chest heaving, trapped between the cars.
"You crazy bitch!" she screamed.
I walked up to her, staring down at the money.
"That's a lot of cash for someone who claims she's just a victim," I said.
Vanessa glared at me, her mascara running down her face like black tears.
"You think Luca cares about you?" she spat. "He's using you! Just like he used me!"
"No," a voice said from the darkness.
We both turned.
Luca walked out of the alley, his white shirt stained with blood. It wasn't his.
Behind him, two guards were leading my mother and father out of the rain. They were shaken, but alive.
"Mom! Dad!" I cried, running to them.
My father hugged me from his wheelchair. My mother kissed my face, crying.
Luca walked up to Vanessa.
He looked at the spilled money. He looked at the necklace.
"My mother's necklace," Luca said, his voice deadly quiet. "You stole it from the vault before you ran."
Vanessa started to cry, real tears this time. "Luca, please. They forced me..."
Luca didn't scream. He simply looked at his guards.
"Put her in the trunk," he said. "Take her to the police station. Hand them the security footage of her kidnapping my son, and the financial records of her extortion."
He leaned in close to her. "You are dead in this city, Vanessa. If I ever see your face again, I won't call the police."
Vanessa was dragged away, screaming.
Luca turned to me. He looked at my family, then at my face.
He reached out and gently wiped a streak of mud from my cheek.

"It's over," he said.
