Authorities have released a heartbreaking update in the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, a case that has captured national attention for weeks.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that newly analyzed DNA evidence suggests the involvement of an unknown individual, shifting the investigation from a missing-person search into a full criminal case.

During a press briefing, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos described the forensic discovery as one of the most significant developments since the investigation began.

According to investigators, DNA samples recovered from blood-stained gloves and other items found near Nancy’s property in Tucson, Arizona, belong to a man who has no known connection to Nancy or her family.

“This individual is not a relative and does not appear to be someone close to the victim,” the sheriff stated.

The DNA profile also does not match anyone currently listed in the national CODIS criminal database, meaning the suspect may have no prior criminal record or has never had DNA entered into the system.

Authorities said the discovery came after weeks of detailed forensic work and advanced DNA analysis. Investigators also used genetic genealogy techniques—tools that have helped solve many cold cases—to attempt to identify the unknown suspect.

So far, however, no definitive identity has been confirmed.

Officials also revealed that surveillance footage captured near Nancy’s home on the night she disappeared showed a masked man carrying a backpack walking outside the property. The gloves believed to be worn by that individual are now part of the forensic evidence under examination.

Investigators believe a struggle may have occurred at the residence. Blood traces were reportedly discovered near the doorway and porch area, further strengthening the theory that Nancy was forcibly taken.

The case has now officially transitioned from a rescue effort into a homicide investigation.
