Bill Clinton In Hot Water After Blowing Off Congressional Subpoena

Former President Bill Clinton faces potential contempt of Congress proceedings after defying a congressional subpoena by failing to appear for a scheduled closed-door deposition before the House Oversight Committee in connection with its ongoing investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The former president had been formally subpoenaed to provide sworn testimony at a closed-door session scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the Capitol. Media personnel present at the hearing room reported that Clinton did not appear before the committee at the scheduled time.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., had previously issued warnings that non-compliance with the congressional summons could trigger formal contempt proceedings against the former president.
Several committee members arrived for the scheduled deposition, including Republican Representatives Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Scott Perry of Pennsylvania.
Chairman Comer also warned former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that she could face similar contempt of Congress proceedings if she fails to comply with a separate subpoena requiring her testimony.
The legal standoff originates from subpoenas authorized by the House Oversight Committee’s subcommittee on federal law enforcement as lawmakers expanded their inquiry into Epstein's network and the federal government's handling of related cases. The subcommittee unanimously authorized subpoenas for ten high-profile individuals, including former Attorney General Bill Barr and former FBI Director James Comey.
Bill and Hillary Clinton were included in the congressional inquiry due to questions regarding their past associations with Epstein and potential information relevant to the committee's investigation. A committee spokesperson confirmed that neither of the Clintons had contacted the panel regarding the current subpoenas or provided official explanations for their absence.
The committee initially issued subpoenas to the Clintons over a year ago. Following preliminary discussions with defense attorney David Kendall, original deposition dates in late 2025 were repeatedly rescheduled.
"It has been more than four months since Bill and Hillary Clinton were subpoenaed to sit for depositions related to our investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s horrific crimes."
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer stated during a committee briefing regarding the scheduling delays.
"Throughout that time, the former President and former Secretary of State have delayed, obstructed, and largely ignored the Committee staff’s efforts to schedule their testimony."
Chairman James Comer added regarding the panel's attempts to secure sworn statements.
"If the Clintons fail to appear for their depositions next week or schedule a date for early January, the Oversight Committee will begin contempt of Congress proceedings to hold them accountable."
Chairman James Comer emphasized regarding potential legislative enforcement mechanisms.
The ongoing congressional dispute follows the release of photographic records obtained from Epstein's estate by committee members, including images depicting President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton, and Britain’s Prince Andrew. The released materials represent a portion of more than 95,000 images received by the committee from the estate.

Jeffrey Epstein died in federal custody in August 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges.
Spokespersons for former President Clinton have previously stated that he severed contact with Epstein prior to Epstein’s 2019 arrest and maintained no knowledge of the criminal conduct alleged against the financier. The House Oversight Committee continues to evaluate next steps regarding potential contempt resolutions as its broader investigation proceeds.
